Retainers that are new should not take long to clean. Hold them under running lukewarm water to get rid of the plaque or other impurities. You can use a toothbrush to gently scrub it. Never use warm water, leave your retainers in the sun or put them in a dishwasher or microwave.
Retainers are easy to clean when they are soaked in water. If the retainers have been lying outside and gathering debris, let them stay in a cup of water to loosen it up. Clean them with some mild dish soap and lukewarm water. Rub the inside of the retainers with an old toothbrush or cotton cloth.
Removable retainers are easier to clean because you can hold them in your hand and wash them. If you have fixed o permanent retainers, floss them regularly to keep them clean. Star with a small piece of floss to clean the front teeth. After a few days, you’ll get a hang of it and you’ll be able to reach the back of your mouth easily.
If your dentist has not already advised you on how to clean it using a denture or a retainer cleaner, like them. Cleaners can help keep the retainers clean especially if you are planning on wearing removable retainers for longer. Soak the cleaner tablets and the retainers in a cup of water to clean them.
